7.3.2. Superintendent's Report
Description:
Library Books - We have had concerns about books in the children's library coming up more often over the last couple of years. One recently involved a book that looks like a children's book, but is written for an older audience. I am working with Laurie and the library to decide what can be done to keep books out of the library that are not age appropriate.
District Curriculum Inventory — We are creating an inventory for the curriculum purchases to better track the purchases we make every year. We are finding that as teachers leave the district and new teachers are hired, pieces of the purchases are being forgotten or misplaced. HS/MS Athletics Budget — The budget to this point in the year has been used up. The budget will be supplemented with other funds for the second year. The reasons for the negative balance are: official rates have increased 42% over the last four years; higher entry fees; lower attendance at events; overnight trips (HSWR 6 out of 8 weekends) — more overnights & costs increased; and overall expenses for uniforms and supplies. District Decision:
Training Rules — A group has been reviewing the Athletic Training Rules for updates and alignment with FFA and FBLA groups. Some situations have come up that do not have clear guidance. Coaching Situation — There was confusion with our football coaches this past fall over who was a volunteer and who was a paid coach. Jason and I have worked out the situation and will pay the fourth coach. Procedures are being put into place starting this spring with the hope of not having miscommunications or misunderstandings. Volunteer Coaches (Unpaid) - An assistant football coach was hired last spring, and the proper communication did not occur with who was the paid assistance and who was not getting paid. We are approving the pay to Adam W to make up for the oversight. We have begun a process this spring for all volunteer coaches. There are training requirements for all volunteer coaches, and a notice of assignment will be signed with the amount they are getting paid or if there is not any pay for the position. Designated Bank for General Fund — We are looking into moving the general fund to a new bank. Currently, we have district funds in Community Banks of Colorado and Dolores State Bank, and we are exploring the option of moving the general fund to DSB. This move comes after changes Community Banks have made and the amount of time the district has to dedicate to banking there without being able to work directly with our local branch. New Student Success Position — Filling the hole for Mrs. Cook-Caraham. - We are discussing the possibility of a new position for the district. The position will replace the Behavioral Specialist position. The hope for the new position is that the job description is not as specific as the Behavioral Specialist job description, and support students in all aspects within both schools. We have not had success for a few years with getting certified candidates in social/emotional counseling, so this new position will work with the team to provide the best student experience for all students, and understand the students' needs for counseling or therapy, so the family can do what they need to do for the student. |

7.3.2.1. Bulldog Way update (STF3)
Description:
Dealila and Christine have been working hard at finalizing our Bulldog Way signage for the school and the signs should now be ordered.
The communication team are putting together some mid-year strategic updates and additional communication tools to better communicate district news. One area that needs to be focused on next year, and connecting the Bulldog Way is behavior at sporting events by spectators, players, and coaches. Behavior by each group has had some less than acceptable incidents this year. Expectations for next year will be discussed and introduced as we head into fall sports. |

7.3.2.2. AG Shop/Secondary BEST Grant update (FAC1)
Description:
|
|
7.3.2.3. Food Service Review
Description:
This year, the food service has had some staff members personal obstacles that have created some instability in the food service department. The group has managed to maintain operations without anyone outside the kitchen noticing any impact on these personal obstacles. In the first semester, meals prepared did not match counts very well. Cassie worked with Charlotte to improve the daily count so she was able to prepare the appropriate amount of food each day.
The cook position will be looked at as we close out the school year to determine if the job description needs to be adjusted. The use of two part-time positions may be needed more than having a full-time cook four days a week. Cassie will work on the cook job description and determine what she feels is needed for next fall. The food service budget is doing better this year with the overall budget at 62% for the year. A couple of areas to note are: salaries are down, substitute pay is over budget, and lunch meals are at 70% for the year. Students eat for free so the district is reimbursed from the state for the number of student meals served. The state set the serving portions for all levels of students who eat school lunches/breakfasts. This is one reason it is important to have the correct counts and serving sizes every day. Unfortunately, many students do not get full on the recommended serving sizes et by the state. Staff meals are down this year since the price for an adult meal was raised to $5.00. |
